Default Rust rover?

I just looked at a 67k orig mi D1 1996 model

Pretty basic unit. Rock solid mechanicals. Clean interior with cloth seats and minimal frills

It does have some rust in the rear wheel arches. Should the rust be a deal breaker? The chassis is clean and rust free

Thanks

Not a deal breaker, they all rust there, also if you open the front doors there will be rust in the door frame below the hinges.

It is weird to me, the rest of the rig looks immaculate.

On the top of the passenger side rear wheel arch in the door jamb is actually a sizable hole.

The rig runs out great, I hammered it on acceleration and let it idle with the ac running full blast for 20 min and it never got hot or complained at all.

The black paint and the rust I don't like.

Asking price is 4700. Seems high.

I do like that it is a base model with no sunroofs and not so many bells and whistles

I'm going to look at another 96 with 145k and supposedly all records and original owner next. Im curious to compare with double the mileage on the rig.

The body is aluminum, the inner panels are steel, anywhere the two meet corrosion is common because dissimilar metals do that, they trade electrons and whatever.
That rust can be fixed.

KBB value is only 2200 in excellent shape, I'd have to give it more of a fair to good condition rating. What would b a fair price for such a lw miles unit? I see clean high milers and mechanic specials for 2k all over the valley.

I may see if he will accept a book value offer. My experience itching such deals is it is worth what somebody is willing to pay.

After wrenching on a d2 I can see the d1 being a lot easier to work on. Much more primitive and robust in my I
Opinion.. Th d2 is plush though.

I dont know where you live but yeah, its only worth what someone is willing to pay.
I would pay more because of the low miles assuming those are the actual miles and it has not been turned back.
I paid $4500 for mine back in '07 with 152,change on the clock, book was $5900, they were asking $6200.
If you have cash to wave in their face that makes things happen faster, I bought a "donor" that was not even for sale because I waved 600 $100 bills in his wifes face.
Then I pulled the ARB winch bumper off of it and turned around and sold it for $600.
Low ball the guy, dont be afraid to walk away, the worse that can happen is he says no.

Phoenix area,

Lots of those around here, the rust free ones normally show some sun damage

As tight and right as this unit is, I'm sure the mileage is accurate. Clean title as well

There is another one close by with 145 k. Looks and sounds like a cherry, but I need to go look at it yet. Asking 2500. Clean title, car fax, records, garage kept.

Yet another one with about 100 k ,1999, interior is a bit heat ravaged. Has fuel management issues. Real cheap though.

If you can help it stay away from the ones with tons of problems, read the tech section for the what to look for and common issues.

The rust is really unsettling to me. I did make the guy an offer though
If he accepts I will give it another good look over and decide whether or not to buy it.

Why do all you guys who live in the south worry about a little rust?
Cracks me up.
You need to vacation up here for a couple of weeks.
