Default Should I buy a 99 Disco needing head gasket

I'm looking at a 1999 disco with 167K miles that has a blown head gasket. I understand the head gasket is a problem with these and like the idea of once it is fixed, not having to worry about that for awhile. So my questions are these.
How much would a mechanic charge to replace a head gasket?
Could a so so home mechanic do it himself?
What is a 99 with a blown head gasket worth?
Thanks to all

considering you don't know its has been overheated or not i would steer away.

as for the head gaskets,
2 days and $300 if you plan on doing it yourself.
$1200 if you have an indie mechanic do it
$3000+ if you have a dealer do it.

Default Depends on if...

you are going to fix it, or a shop will have to fix it.
If the rover is free, then sure, why not. You failed to mention the price of the Disco. We truly cannot give advice one way or the other without this vital information.

Also, what is the interior and exterior condition like? Does everything else work?

Took 2 of us 8 hours roughly to do a D2. First headgasket job on a Disco I have ever done. Granted I am a Audi Tech so it is pretty basic in comparison but still I would expect anyone with mechanical aptitude should be able to tackle this.

Default The owners asking $1,900

Thanks for the replys.
The owner of the 99 is asking $1,900 but he sounds very negotiable, we have been talking about trading for some guns I have or something else.
I have only seen pictures of it at this point, (the rover is about 1.5 hour away from me). Any other recommendations or advice would be most appreciated.

$1900 is waaaay too expensive for a blown headgasket vehicle. Where is it located? Rust alley? You need pics and justification for that price. Like it has a lift and alot of aftermarket parts. I would not pay more than $500 for it.

Default Thanks,

Thanks ColoDisco, I'll make him an offer and see what he says, and I'm located in Utah. I'll let you know what happens.

Wow I payed 1900 for mine in almost perfect working order. No major leaks or anything and the body was in great shape other than a small dent on the fender and the interior was in good shape. Id say if you can get it for under 900 go for it.
