Belt is in good shape. Pulley is fine.
When I touch the alternator it feels like nuts and bolts in a blender. A/C compressor, idler, p/s & water pump felt fine. After about two minutes the alt was scorching.
Ordered a 120 amp for a P38.
It's been sitting since Saturday, the 22nd. Driving my 3rd of three. She ain't pretty but the a/c works, tires are black, round, hold air, and everything works except the paint. It flies off driving down the road.
Sure beats hitching. My legs aren't as sexy as they used to be.
I'd take a working car over a none working car any day of the week. When I wore a younger mans clothes it mattered much, these days I simply need the car to start when I turn the car. When that happens I am good to go.
Before I got my previous 96, the owner was telling me his would go out once a month, and luckily, he had a OReilly lifetime that they would give him a new one no problem. I was still at NAPA then and convinced him mine was better and got one in for him. I also set him up with spare bearings in case it was a back country need... (common number, easy to change).
He came back next day and said same problem! So, my standard line of questions found out OReilly never asked or checked but had never charged battery to full 12.6+, charged battery and worked perfect. Luckily, he decided to sell it to me for 600 dollars and go to Toyota... I did put an Optima in but same alternator for 2 years - until I slipped a liner.
Back to my point though, the common BCA bearing was less than 10 bucks (?6302, just guessing butI stocked 10 at our small store) and easily something you could do - even as noisy as yours is, it is probably save-able (spare?). Just a thought for the future....
I picked up a rebuilt with 1 year warranty OEM LR alternator from Goldwing Rover for $100 US plus about $30 shipping from the UK - better than a Chinese knock-off or $350 new Lucas
Ended up getting a new Delphi / Merelli. Had this one rebuilt a couple few years ago. Shop said its been into a couple times already and the slip rings are worn. I can rebuild but screw it, I'll do it later.
