The stock single din unit (cassette) is dead so I am going to bin it. Has anyone upgraded speakers front and rear with stock off the shelf or do they spacers or panel mods to make them fit? I have some Fusion 5.25" splits that I would like to use but they are fairly deep....I have just spent a small fortune on upgrades for my M5 and pretty pissed off with it....so would rather reinvent the wheel with this car

Good post linked there. I figure any low to medium-price 4" speaker has a good chance of fitting. The high-end ones with large drivers probably won't.

Is there an easy way to get Aux In on the stock system with the CD changer? Not with a tape deck adapter, or fm transmitter, but with a line in somewhere. I wonder what wires I can tap into.

I thought so. That's what I'm looking for. Because I've got the seat out and I'm working in there today, on another project.

Most important thing is that your CD player still connects to the head unit. Without those control codes, your head unit will believe the CD player is dead and will not play the audio. All that you will get is an 'ERR' on the screen of your head unit.

I've since re-done the box and installed USB power with this..

I also put one above the ash tray on the back of the cubby for use by passengers in the back seat (my kids and their devices mostly)

 

Thanks for the write up Walt. I also just installed a USB power point on the back of my center console. I used the Blue Sea one from Amazon. It works great at 2.1A.

Now I'm trying to think of how to manage several different inputs to the stock deck. The 4 wires on the cd-changer cable identified tells me all I need to know, but now I want to have a rotary selector switch that allows me to choose between four or five sources because I have the cd-changer, three other radios, as well as headphone jacks on tablets and phones. I can do all the tablets and phones with one 3.5mm jack but I don't want to have to swap the cable for the other radios, just turn a dial. I can do that, but the rotary switches and all the wires are going to take a lot of space. I might be better off making a small pc board with hole-mounted switches and jacks.
