Default Switch to steel wheels tire question

I’m like tire retarded so I need some help. I’m gonna be getting some of the nato style steel wheels in January and it looks they’re 1/2” narrower than stock, 16x7 vs 16x6.5 for steel. I’m currently running D2 size 255/65/16s on my stock wheels and they have a good half tread left some I’m wanting to just move them over to the new steel wheels and save the 800$ for a bit. Question is are they going to be too big for the steel?

Should i I just bite the bullet and get the 235/70/16’s that are stock tire size to begin with? Anyone been through this? I’ve tried a bunch of the online calculators and not finding a reason they won’t fit...

They would probably be alright, but a 7" rim is recommended for that size.

I had a problem with a 255/65/16 Cooper Discoverer M+S on a 16X6.5 NATO ANR4583. Problem as in it rolled off the left front bead . We need a "$hit my pants" emoji.
That tire is recommended "Approved rim width 7 - 9" and a measured "rim width 7.5"(I just check this spec again now) so there in lies the problem. I went with a Cooper Discoverer M+S 235/70/16 and the specs where fine. Approved rim width was 6 - 7.5

So, I would say check the tire spec of the 255 you have and then make a decision. But as to "fit" diameter, etc of the 255, yes it will fit and not rub. Will the tire you have stay on the rim... Mine did not.

Yeah I’m thinking I just gotta nite the bullet and get a set of tires too. If it was just me I wouldn’t care but I carry my kids sometimes and it sounds kinda edgy. Thanks for the input guys. You can’t beat getting the answers from others who already did it. Never a need to reinvent the wheel. No pun intended.

That's a good choice, especially with kids involved. I know I will never make that mistake again. Now it's double check the specs and believe them.

Steel wheels aren't great for holding a bead.
On the other hand, I ran 315/75's aired down on my stock Deep Dish alloy wheels with no problem at all.
