Spike,
When you say you made your own, what did you do? What ratio did you use when you mixed it?

Mine is an "Early " 97 ( mfg in mid 96). Ithas the drain plugs just like the illustration shows. I currently have the 80 w90 in both sides. No problem that I can see.

Cool, I just wanted to push the idea that this wasn't my opinion, rather fact

My opinion is that you can use diff lube or suitable grease, they're a pain to drain is all

I've got lube in one, grease (one shot) in the other for probably 7k miles now.

I've read the brits use 140 in their's, even mixing it with one shot, but I'd avoid that for no particular reason.

I pumped (20 times each side) grease into mine every 6 months for the first to years.
Then this year I had left over gear lube from doing the drive line.
I poured 1 pint into each side.
So I made my own.

If you have your oil changed at a quick lube they will pump it full of grease.
If you take it to a Rover dealer they will use the one shot stuff.
The only problem of using gear lube in a swivel ball that has no drain is that once the gear lube wears out how do you remove it?
I am going to stay with using grease every 6 months.

Cool,
Since mine has the drains, I will most likely use the gear lube for now.
