Default Swivels --- Need your opinion

Hello all

I was it the process of performing the defender brake upgrade on my disco1 when I was blessed I puddle of oil and grease under the wheel. So what started out as brakes and rotors is now a full swivel rebuild.

Here's my question......

Is the swivel ball in good enough shape to reuse ??????

My thought is yes, but since this is the first time I will be doing this rebuild I wanted input from all of you folks who have done this before to see what you think.

The lines on the swivel appear to be from the seal. Not sure why since there is no rotation. There are no groves and no pitting.

Yes. Compared to others I've seen, they almost look new.

I am planning to replace the bottom swivel bearings and thrust bearings. But can someone tell me if the top swivel bushing needs to be replaced as well or is this good as long as there is no major damage. I am not wanting to be cheap about the rebuild, but at the cost of some of these parts I don't want to replace parts unnecessarily.

You are this far apart and its a lot of work, IMO replace the bearings and seals save the pins unless they are pitted or appear damaged, don't want to do this again, don't forget the swivel grease

Tom R,

Bearings, seals and grease on the way from AB. Just curious on the top swivel bushing as they are $50 each. Already into it for $900 for brake conversion and I am trying to keep the short term money hemorrhaging to a minimum if I can. I know these things are not cheap to work on but I would like to not spend all my life savings at once.....lol

By the time you are done with this vehicle you will forget the meaning of savings lol

There is a good training video for defender on YouTube for doing this

I have watched that video and also found a series on youtube by Land Rover Toolbox Videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAPT...Fi5wW4YRZn-miP which is put together by Paddock in the UK on swivels and axles (covers defender, series and discovery). If you are interested in watching I recommend looking it up on you tube by LR TV since the series is in like 12 parts. The process seems pretty straight forward. So far the only thing that bothers me if you can call it that is the flippin' mess. I have done a lot of repairs on a lot of cars but this has to be messiest.

Thanks everyone for the info.
