Default taillights freaking out

so my brother and I were out to dinner tonight, and his d1 is having some problems. I told him he should sell it and get a d2, but he likes it! I give him hell about his d1 problems and he does the same about my two d2s... but anyway his tail lights seem to have a short of some sort. he thought he had a bulb out and when he went to replace it all bulbs were working fine. the next day he gets pulled over for having taillights out. sometimes they wrok and sometimes they don't. the passenger rear bumper light goes out the same time the driver taillight goes out. is there something that would cause this.. relay, switch, stem switch?

Once you've determined that bulbs, fuses, etc aren't the culprits, try removing the rear lenses out of the body and check to see if the plastic housing around the contacts have melted deforming the metal strips that contact the light bulbs. The bulb won't be able to make proper contact with the circuit. From what I've learned here, they're prone to doing that. I had to replace both lenses due to melted housings.

thanks we'll check that. I'm just thinking that since it is ocurring diagonally across the back it is leading me to believe it has something to do with how the truck is wired, and I was hoping someone who understands the wiring setup of these might know. I had a samurai that did something similar so I will look for melted plugs that was my initial thought anyway

My issue was the same. I was going to check the wiring until I saw a thread about the taillight housings are prone to melting. Checked it and it was the case with mine.
