I agree with adv. I think it's time to pull this one out and rebuild. It's probably the only way you are going to fix the problem. It appears to be shot and in need of a major overhaul including that new timing chain, all new sensors, and a new ECU. Just my $0.02. Good luck with whatever route you decide to go.

Just read yer timing chain post, yes chains on V-8s wear, THey should be nearly no slack, if you replace it with the buick set, it will prob wear n stretch faster than EUro OEM also there is a Cam KNOCK issue on certain years, might wanna research your VIN # and verify, if you have this issue, often mistaken for a main bearing knock. The repair is pretty dumb but it works, they sell you a rubber erasor type thing which basically rubs the cover plate to prevent the cam from floating.. fix a dumb problem with a dumber solution.. but hey ive done several and none have come back to haunt me.. good luck!

Vashenrovermechanic: I think you are definitly on the right tracvk. Very interesting, I did not know about the cam knock. I replaced the rod bearings a few weekes back because I thought that they might be shot. They were grooved but not even close to being as bad as I have seen before. I have used my stethiscope and found that most of the bang, bang is comeing from what appears to be the front of the two heads area. I cannot isolate it because it does sound deep. I'll see what I can find out about this. I really wish not to spend anymore money on this engine, but if a new Cam, bearings and timeing chain is what it is asking for, I suppose I'll comply. After this work though, this engine better run right. I have a 1997 D1 ECU that I can drop in after I replace the parts. I always felt something was wrong with this timeing for some reason. The chain bothers me because I have never seen one this loose before. Who has the best prices for Cam, cam bearings, and timeing chain set?

I noticed something this morning. The air temp was 56 degrees. I started my engine and it ran perfect. Nice power, idle was a bit high, around 850 but ran smooth. I went out and opened the hood and did not hear any knocks. Later when I arrived at work I shut the engine down and went in for about two hours. I came back out and the engine started good, rpm was good, but as soon as I started driving and the engine temp went to normal, I got hesistation, loss of idle at stops, and I could hear that knock again. Seems like i'm getting good fuel when cold, but when it warms up it seems like it either is being choked or overfueled and fouling out. Pretty sure the bad 6mpg is when the engine is warm. ?????????

YOu asked which Models had cam knock, call Landrover dealer, give them your vin# and they will check to see if your year and model (i believe it was 98 4.0 discovery) for the warranty / they might even provide the repair kit for free... Land ROvers policy is not to volunteer information but if asked specifically they will look it up. good luck .
