Timing Chain

Default Timing Chain

I need to change my timing chain. Has a lot of play in it. I have never done one before. What do I need to Know or do to make the change? I discovered this when I was replacing my front main seal. Any help would be great.

Front main seal do you meen the crankshaft seal or the seal between the block and timing cover?

Its a simple job, you will find a Buick double row timing chain and gears will fit.
I have a couple of Buick V6's and most of the timing cover and associated parts interchange with both Rover and Leyland V8's.

Not that simple i believe it requires dropping the oil pan to get the front cover off.

I have the oil pan and front cover off. Do I need to set it to any point before I remove the gears and chain?

No just throw a timing chain and gear on. Might want to replace the oil pump while your there? Why did you remove the FC & OP to do a front crank seal?

Front crank seal was poring oil out and wanted to see the condition of the pump. I have new oil pump, Water pump gasket, Front cover gasket, Oil pick up o-ring. Any Thing else I should look into when I'm In that area?

Before you reinstall the chain you have to rotate the cam and crank timing marks on the gears to face each other. Cam timing mark is at 6 O'clock, crank timing mark is at 12 O'clock. Remove gears once timed and place on flat surface with marks again facing each other and put chain on then install entire assembly with marks facing each other once more.

The reason for this is your removing a slack old chain and installing a tight new chain. If it's one tooth off guess what, this is an interference engine, bent valves and divots in your pistons really suck *****.

So I rotate the gears with the chain off right? Never tackled this before.
