Default Tires size and Gas consumption relation

Hi guys, my name is Carlos and I am from Bolivia.

Recently I bought a 1998 LE Discovery I NAS V-8 4.0 with 85k mi. The truck came with 235/70R-16 and I want to change them for General Graber AT2 265/70R-16. I have been told by some friends who own disco 1 that I should keep the same tire size if I don't want that gas consumption sky rocketed. According to him this is due to the close relation of engine, gearbox and axle.
Please any comment, opinion and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I went even smaller

205 80 r16

Pizza cutter life is great. Gets a bit hairy on emergency braking or sharp turn. Gas mileage a bit better, maybe a couple mpg.

Dave, you happen to have any photos of your wheels/tires and are you lifted any?
Cheers

Carlos,
Your friends are loco. Larger diameter tires in theory get better mpg because you go further with fewer engine rpms. Rolling resistance of the wider tread may offset the mpg increase by a small amount.

Yes I have a photo somewhere. I just fit some defender 5.5" steel wheels and lugnuts. Sorry no photo right now of how skinny they look but they are really skinny.

Edit: yes minor 2" lift done a while back (not by me)

I don't know of any AT tires in that size. I actually got some older michellin XCL's in decent shape with my wheels so they stay for now. I think the closest I could find for future replacement is 215 80 r16 (goodyear duratracs)
