Default Transfer Case Issue

I have a 1996 disco. Yesterday while driving on the highway the gear slipped from high to neutral with no help on my part. I was able to get the gear back into high but have a concern whether this is a sign of a future problem. Should the gear slip out of high to neutral? Has anyone ever had it happen before? If so what was the result (i.e. it was not a problem or it broke and was undrivable). I don't want to pay $1200 to $1500 to have a non-existent problem fixed (i.e. it is something that can occur if it is not fully engaged).

Thanks for any information.

Mine has done that before but not while driving.
It did it after I had used another gear on it and did not have it all the way back in Hi.

Dont worry about it unless it happens all the time, like every time you drive.

I would get concerned about it if it repeats, even sporadically, not as Spike said "every" time.

Is the maintenance up to date on the vehicle. Does the CDL engage and disengage?

Does it shift smoothly from high to low normally or has low never been used?

I would not freak out about it, but I would make sure I understand how it is supposed to work and compare that to how it is currently working.

I had the same thing happen one time when I didn't engage the T-Case all the way into high one time. Keep an eye on it, and if it does it again, get it checked out.
