Transmission Drain Plug
 

Just my luck. I decided to change the transmission fluid today and the drain plug was mysteriously easy to remove. Upon investigation the threads have totally disintegrated. Ever heard of that happening before?

All the LR shops in Denver are closed until Monday. I guess Indy will stay on the Rhino Ramps until I can get a replacement on Monday.

are the threads in the pan ok ?......

From what I can tell visually, the threads in the pan look like they're fine. I guess I'll find out when I attempt to insert the new one in there. Looks like metal fatigue took its toll on the old drain plug.

That doesn’t look like a transmission drain plug. Transfer Case yes, but transmission no.

Didn't even think of 5spd lol. To darn used to D2's! Wish I knew the thread size for ya! Auto Part stores usually have a wide selection of drain plugs.

It's an Automagic, says so in his sig. Lots of miles.

Yep I saw that, and that’s why I originally said that looks like a TC drain plug. The auto drain plug is an allen headed unit no doubt about it. The OP hasn’t replied back since.

The AT drain plug the OP has is RTC4647 and it's correct for a DI, RRC, & others with an original ZF sump. The washer is STC1060.

The Allen plug came later, but it is used in the replacement/aftermarket AT sumps.

BUT the real kick in the A$$ is the Hex head plug and the Allen head plug have different threads. :cheers:

Yup, the RTC4647 hex head drain plug is what I need and JC's British 4X4 says there are none in the Denver area. I checked the websites for the big box auto repair stores and no one had the plug in stock. Matt at Roadside Werx has some old D1 transmissions that he's going to pull a plug from for me. That'll get old Indy going again and off the ramps. I'll order a new one and replace it to avoid this scenario in the future. I'm glad Dex III is super cheap at WalMart!
