Default truck rattles

Hi,

I have a 1997 discovery with 150 KM(93000Miles). My problem is when i drive my truck past the 100km(62miles). My whole truck would start rattling. I never had this problem before I just started getting it last week. Could it be the wheel bearing going bad or is it something serious like engine problem?

Default Rattling

I would start simple - see if the wheels are still balanced.
I had a similar issue and it was a weight that fell off.

It could be a bearing, I would guess drive train/u-joint wear before bearing, but I sincerely doubt an engine issue.

How bad was the rattle? Is it similar to a " death wabble "?

I don't think its the weights on the wheels. Its when I step on the gas and as soon as it reaches past 100km(62miles) it would start rattling. When I let go off the gas it would stop.

@roving patrol - what do you mean the 'death wobble'? Are you referring to the shock stabilizer in the middle of the steering rods?

Does it feel like you are going to die when it starts shaking?

If things get loose in the front end you can get some pretty scary shaking at speed. It could be swivel pins, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, bushings, and probably other things.

@jafir - it doesn't feel that the engine is about to die. It just that it shakes when i go past 100km(62miles).

That's what mine did. When I went to an actual shop, they spun them up to a higher speed (75 I believe) and it was an Oz or 3 off on 2 tires. They corrected the weighting and placement and it has been gone ever since. Now, If I push the truck up over 80, I start to get that "rattle" again, and as soon as I let off the gas, it goes away.

So - I stay under 80!

Check that all tires are of equal pressure and balanced... head on over to your favorite tire shop and have them check that out for you. When it is up on the lift you can check for any slop in the steering too. If you grab a front wheel (while it is ON the truck) at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions and try to move it in and out ( push inward on top and pull outward on bottom at same time then rock in and out) this will check for play in the swivel pins.... do the same test at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions to test for wheel bearings or loose ball joints.

When you reach a certain speed and the vehicle starts to shake violently ( almost like you are about to lose control ), that is what a " Death Wabble " is. Like Cosmic88 post, those were just some of the causes. When I was in this situation, what I did was rotate all my tires and made sure that they're well balanced....that solved the problem.

I had the same problem. First time it was a cracked (badly) rotoflex. Started up a few months later and turned out one of my tires needed nearly 6oz of weights. Apparently they were a stick on style and it threw them all off at some point. The second time I thought that the shaking was so bad that I had some major front end problems. Once they balanced the tires she drove like a dream. I would start there. Good luck.
