Your guess is as good as mine, looks almost like clearcoat applied on wet engine.

Have you tied to remove a specific spot of it?

Would engine degreaser then powerwash remove it? (put a baggie over dist & alt just in case - I powerwash my '97 several times a year, no problems)

luck,greg

Mine is kinda the same way, drove through some deep muddy water and it soaked under the hood.
It will not come off no matter what you use unless you scrub it.
Mine is still there going on 2 years because I refuse to scrub a engine.

I have used:
Engine Wash Foamy
Engine Wash Heavy Duty
Will try some stuff I make but it will etch aluminum so I am a little worried about that.
When I get the parts unit (SOME DAY) I will take the time to repaint and then I will have it solved but as a chemist it is driving me NUTS!!

I think it is a wax that land rover puts on it, I have noticed a sticker on my radiator support saying to rewax after steam cleaning the engine.

It doesn't appear to have a pattern, almost like the hood was open when it happened.

Have you scraped at it?

Has it penetrated or is it on the surface?

I think a little alum etching would look nice (like sand blasted) if it were controllable
(though it will eat paint?)

Is that the same stuff on oil filler neck?

Maybe a battery blew up in there or something. That's what it looks like.

Looks to me like dried dirt from playing in the mud.

it looks like blue devil engine sealant after it has been put in the cooling system but comes out spraying. It is a liguid glass like substance that sticks very well. Have you or a prior owner used blue devil or similar product in the cooling system? It is alright, you are among friends.......Phil

I have seen it several times in Audi's. It is a blown battery or a corrosive solution of some kind.
