The real question is "What harm is it doing?" You could relly scew things up if you get to aggressive trying to clean it.

Be honest the guy I got Mutley from kicked that dog a LOT and never gave it fresh water for sure. Translation, He did NOTHING to maintain the inside for sure and I don't think it was EVER washed.
WE know for sure that some of the heavy cleaner that we make DOES NOT EVEN PHASE IT. I am thinking that it is a WAX of some sort OR maybe a battery BUT can not get it nailed down.
Just that when I go someplace to do a seminar EVERYBODY looks over what I drive like it was Pebble Beach!!

Guys are pigs, I wondered how L-o-n-g it'd take

George, For decades I've used charcoal lighter fluid to remove bug guts, "fresh oil" , road tar -- I just let it soak if necessary

Something petroleum based to remove it?
Forgive me if that horse is gone.

Have you scraped at it? No yet

Has it penetrated or is it on the surface? Looks like it in SOME places

I think a little alum etching would look nice (like sand blasted) if it were controllable
(though it will eat paint?) Desolve paint is closer to the truth

Is that the same stuff on oil filler neck? Yes it is

luck,greg
I have some time so I will try some stuff I blended in the lab and see what happens. I just have to watch out since this stuff is heck on rubber and gaskets at 100% We sell it at 10% and that is strong in some cases.
Let my play with this a little more. Not to the stage of scrape a sample for the mass spec.
