Default What a mysterious shaking of whole chasis

Hello dear all, i'm Gokhan from Turkiye.
We are living in Mugla, Koycegiz which is very close to Fethiye and Marmaris.
Last 10 years we are living in rural side and this Discovery 1 is our 3rd Land Rover
after two Defender 91 and 92.

Last couple of months our 1996 Discovery 1 Manual has serious issue to solve.

Please check video and share your opinions.

Video info;
speed : 100-105 km
road condition : not off road but has lots of bumps.

additional info:
- no balance issue for tyres
- not so much empytness in steering wheel
- no shaking up to 130 or 150 km/h speed during on-road (clean surface)
- need to steer a little bit left and right to feel this enormous shake
- need to brake immidiately to stop this shaking.

Thank you in advance for your kind help.

M. Gokhan DEMIR

This is sometimes known as the "Death Wobble". You can search the forum for this term.

possible problems include:
- wheel bearings
- front shock bushings
- steering damper
- swivel pre-load

Steering tie rod ends and wheel alignment also play roles. Basically worn components. Maybe view Trailfitter videos from Bearmach about how to check out the steering components to find the weak spots.

My front hubs needed work when I bought my old Rovers. That is where swivel pre-load is set, requires special shim thicknesses, easy for inexperienced mechanics to get wrong.

Hello,

About a year ago, when driving on a rough track on a motor highway in Belgium, my Disco suddenly began trambling and shaking. All this movements seemed to me “concentrated” round the front driving ***. The alarm lights automatically get on, and I couldn’t switch them out when I restarted the Disco and drove home on secondary roads.
I have had the same trambling and shaking a few times again ; I felt that the steering wheel did feel not so steady as normal
My garagist has then seen that 2 bolts from the steering damper where gone.
Now my steering wheel feels again steady.

Much greetings from Belgium,
PierroDisco
