Default What parts were robbed?

My name is Steve and I'm new to the rover forums. In fact, I have yet to even purchase a land rover... I'll start from the beginning.

I was looking into buying a 1995 LR Disco for $1800. It seemed like a decent deal mostly because of the low mileage - 120k - on it. But when I called to check on it the owner told me that it had been broken into while it was parked on the side of a road with a FOR SALE sign on it. He told me that when he put the key in the dash lights would turn on but the car wouldn't start. He says I can have it for $950 as is.

So I've been looking for the past two days almost non-stop for information on what is missing. What I suspect happened is someone tried to take the car and the alarm went off. (It had no stock alarm, but was equipped with a VIPER). In haste the theif probably ripped wires out to stop the siren.

The biggest problem is that I only have the RAVE for RHD vehicles so I cannot be sure what is missing (I know it is a bunch of relays). What I need to know is....

What 5 or 6 Relays plug into the power-strip-style female port located above the hood release in the driver's footwell?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

did they actually break something? I haven't seen a rover without a factory alarm.

If you search this forum you will find links to the latest RAVE download, which does include LHD models. At that price, it makes you wonder what else might be wrong. Of course he might be ready for it to leave before his wife does...

In my copy of the RAVE, electrical troubleshooting guide, it gave these in the location you describe, with photos:

K 174 Accessory relay
K 189 Horn Relay
K 160 Sounder relay
K 183 rear wiper relay
K 236 Dim/dip relay 2

K160 SOUNDER RELAY
K183 REAR WIPER DELAY RELAY
K236 DIM/DIP RELAY 2

You want the electrical troubleshooting manual part of the RAVE download. Theft alarm is covered in section T1. There is something called Engine Immobilisation Control, etc. This manual also provides pictures of the location of most everything by circuit number from the drawings. These relays and pix were on section Z5 - page 24.

Sometimes the auto auction guys have problems with vistors checking out a vehicle, then swapping or removing some relays to make it non-functional; which reduces the price it sells for at auction.

Thanks for the responses. I am assuming it had no factory alarm, or that the factory one was removed. Why else have the VIPER? Where can I get a copy of the RAVE electrical troubleshooting guide?

Also, If there was an alarm and the car has in fact been immobilized can I hard wire the harness to bypass the VIPER/missing alarm. Or could I simply replace those relays and hotwire the car?

And one more thing...

Would missing only those 5 relays cause the vehicle to not start? Or is that definately an alarm issue?

Offer him $400, tow it home and use it as a parts truck for something that runs and hasn't been messed with.
