Wheel Bearings, the silent killer...
Well I had an eventful weekend. While driving the 60 mile trip home Pinewood Canoe and Campground. My Disco start making a funny noise at around mile marker 24. As I continued to drive (slightly slower) the noise became very lound and eventually start clunking. By this time I was not well considering I had 20 some odd miles to go. Never the less the mighty Disco rolled on, and at about 30 mph, got me home. After hanging the tent up to dry, I jacked the truck up and drained the rear diff (the noisey one). Oil was like new, so I pulled the rear tires and hubs off. It was the passenger inner wheel bearing, it had completely came apart. Strangely it had not given the usual whine or grinding noises other cars gives months in advance. A quick trip trip to advanced auto parts, four new bearings and two seals later, like new! So I guess the word of advice is as cheap as they are to replace, just change em now! I am doing the fronts this weekend.

Thats some redneck engineering right there!!
They usually weld themselves to the stub axle when they do fail at speed. Maybe slowing down helped, but I would certainly agree with Tom about not continuing to drive when the beast is screaming unless you are trying to kill it.
The video of the tree as spare was extreme redneck engineering. Wonder what the Boys in Blue would have to say if thyey saw you doing that. Maybe on a backroad, but never on the Interstate. What an idiot.

I completely agree, there was almost no warning signs. Maybe it was a fluke, but better to be ready for it next time.
