Default Wheel spacers or bigger wheels?

Hi, im brand new to the forum and i just bought a 1998 Land Rover discovery. Now it has the stock wheels on it which suck into the fender and i would like to have the wheels stick out more. I've been looking at spacers and also have been thinking about going with a bigger steal wheel. i do not know what the best way to tackle this is. Some people hate spacers and some don't. I can post a picture if needed.
thanks,
Zach

I have procomp steel wheels with 10.5" tread width tires. The tires extend about 1" past the body.

Its basically personal preference. I went with 16x8 Procomp steel wheels with a 4.25" backspacing. Pushes the wheel out almost an inch and its 1" wider than stock. I felt it was the best option for running large tires and I like the look.

From technical point of view, wheel spacers mess with you off set, and that is not considered good. But people use them all the time, so it's probably no big deal. You can read more about wheal off set. I would just get bigger wheels, and the fattest tires that you can put on your wheels before I would mess with spacers. But then again, I'm not a fan of turbo vents and and S-type decals on Honda Civics, either.

Off-set is off-set, whether you do it with spacers or wheels with more off-set.

What's your goal? Looks or a practical?

For practical purposes, spacers (or wheels with more off-set) on just the front will maintain your turning radius if you user larger OD or wider tires. If just running on the front for that purpose then spacers would make more sense so you can rotate your tires more easily.

If it's for looks get whatever gives you the look you want.
