Hi All-

The biggest expense I'm staring down with my new project is tires. The ones it came with have great tread, but sat underinflated for 12 years and are misshaped and cracked.

Wheels are original 16" and in great shape, but I've had good success in the past with buying take-offs that match up. Found a site that lists compatible bolt patterns and hub size, and it looks like wheels off an X3 or X5 should match. Anyone have any experience doing that swap or have any other ideas? At this point a set of new tires will cost more than the truck did, and I'm against doing that just on principle (but also because I'm cheap). Looking for something that can handle the snow (Sierras) and trails but not hardcore rock hopping. And if I end up going with an 18" wheel or even larger, do I need to do anything with suspension or???

If you have a Discovery 1(1994-1998, and some 1999) then there aren't any wheels from another car manufacturer that will fit. You can find some aftermarket options, but there still aren't a ton.

 

Thank you. What about the 18" option? I see those mentioned as an upgrade. Were they an option? And if I find a set can I just bolt them up or do I need to do anything to accomodate them?

 

Whatever source you're looking at is talking about Discovery II's, not Discovery I's. What year is your Discovery?

 

There are a few 18" options for a Disco 1 with the 5x6.5" bolt pattern. You can source them from the UK

 

18 in wheels on a D1 look like junk. There are other options but like ^ said not many.

What exactly are you going for? The D1 is plenty capable off road with 16’s and the right tires.

OK guys, thanks for the input. I don't know what I don't know here. Sounds like 18's are counter-productive: hard to source, expensive, and worse offroad.

I have a '97 D1 LSE. I have the original wheels (not sure about this, in another post someone said these weren't original on the LSE's). Here's a pic. Sounds like I should just keep them. Fine. Seems like there are a lot of $100 tires available, that gets me out the door for somewhere around $600 after tax/mounting/balancing. More than I wanted but I get new tires.

Stock dimensions the best, or is there a chance to do better? 235/70-16? I'd like something that can go offroad and handle legit winter weather. Don't care much about NVH or even treadwear as I won't be putting a lot of miles on it. Any recommendations?

 

Boost wheels I believe were original to the LSE and those unfortunately are not Boosts.

Regarding tires, any a/t tire will do fine. The Discovery I is a true snowcat. If your transmission, low range and CDL are all in working order, you will not need to sweat the snow or any off road trails less any large rocks. Adding more robust shocks and springs will give you even more ability but will also start costing more. I’d say get some fresh all-terrain tires. MAKE SURE THE TIRE SHOP DOES NOT STRIP YOUR LUG NUTS! YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE CORRECT SIZE TOOL TO REMOVE THEM. EACH LUG HAS CAPS COVERING THE ACTUAL LUG NUT. THE CAPS WILL STRIP EASILY IFTHEY ARE FITTED WITH THE WRONG SIZE WRENCH.
