I have a 97 Discovery. It has a newer motor with 40,000. The truck has 158000. When I first got the truck it was idling high, 2500 in p and n. The other day it felt like it lost all its power and wouldn't go past 45mph. I moved it yesterday and it wouldn't go past idle. When I gave it gas it felt like it was going to stall. I did clean the iacv. That helped a little bit with the idle. Any idea what the problem could be?

No. I actually figured out the problem... Well kind of. The wires that go into the ecu (i think it's an ecu) one of them was lose. I am not sure which one but I wiggled them and problem solved. It's still idling really high though. Cleaning the iacv did not help. Any ideas?

I'm going to change the vacuum hoses today. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

 

I took it for another drive. It started again. I tried wiggling the wires and it did not work.

 

You need to make sure the throttle is opening when this happens.
It could be a throttle cable issue.
Or a throttle linkage issue.

 

It seems like its a wire. Whenever I mess with the wire the problem goes away but then after driving it a few blocks it comes back.

Well it is defiantly a wire. I messed with the wires again and problem fixed. High idle still though. I took the truck for a long drive and it drove fine. I'm sure the problem going to come back.

I have an interview on Monday and I really hope I do not have a problem. Does and one know which wire it is and how to fix it?

 

It could be your cat. My 96 acted this way. Turns out one of the cat had come apart inside, and the honey-comb like material would turn sideways and block the exhaust flow. It wouldn't rev over like 1800... If you looked at the cat while trying to rev it up, it would eventually start glowing red. Then conditions would change... a bump in the road, who knows... and it would be fine. I went to a muffler shop and had it replaced with a weld in, and problem solved.

 

Thats not the problem. Its fine while in d or r once I mess with the wire. Then there is the high idling problem while in p or n.
