What kind of Land Rover? I am assuming a 3.9L because you mentioned a distributor...Are you getting fuel?

The Workshop manual lists the procedure to diagnose the coil, amp, etc. Start with Section 12, chapter Fault Diagnosis, page 3.

OK, coil tested good through all the stuff in manual, so i've changed plugs, coil is good, when it cranks you still get the smell of just gas... So i'm gonna let it sit for the night and charge the battary, thinking plug wires and distributor are only 2 things left so...

Original fuel pump?

My pump on my 97 died recently (@76k miles) and it would not start/stay running unless I smacked the pump.

New pump, and it starts/runs like a charm.

Where is your ignition amplifier? If it's still on the side of the distributor, it could have failed from getting too hot.

The fuel pump on my '96 just gave out a couple of weeks ago, and the fuel filter was clogged also, which probably contributed to the problem. Check the fuel pressure on the fuel rail by pushing on the schraeder valve or with a dial type tire guage. It's right on the fuel rail with a black tire valve type cap on it (or should have). If there is good pressure you will be able to tell. This is after turning the key on or trying to crank.

Walked out this afternoon hit key fired up, misfired alittle, and had black smoke coming exhuast (fuel). Turned off put air box system back on everything back in order and hit key fired up again and ran perfect... guess it got mad i ignored it for 2 weeks...
