I would say that the removal of the air box is more significant than the filter. the "trumpet" seems to be restrictive.

I agree.

I removed the trumpet a while ago, no difference.

Back in my 4runner days. We had a mod called the Deck Plate Mod.

Their filter took air from the wheel well and the filter was vertical. We cut a 4" hole in the front of it put the deckplate ring in and kept the center/sealer for whenever offroading

With a KNN replacement filter they dynoed it and it gave them more horsepower than even a KNN cold air intake.

Plus it was sealable for offroading.

I have thought about my intake but havent figured what i would do with it. I was thinking of running a duct from the corner of my saudi grill into the air box for a ram air effect but figured it would be too much of a hassle to dis connect for off roading. still thinking.

Dont try a duct youll see cooler air but no improvement. And i dont believe it will ram any air, the intake will be in a low pressure area.

I have some huge PVC i plan to make a type of cover or cradle for my filter, just to keep the water off, though if water touched it there would be no problem.

I did the air filter mod. That looks good. As for fuel economy, that remains to be seen. Fingers crossed. You mentioned a Volvo chip. Would you care to elaborate? I for one would be interested to read what anyone has to say on the subject. Thanx

It's not Volvo like the car, the spelling is a little different.

So I did the air filter mod this weekend. Looks good, joy. Today as I'm driving to the Amish kitchen for lunch, and my Red Rover just died, kaput. Coasted into the parking lot, and #^*# a brick. I had been messing with the climate controls when the #^*# hit the fan. I'm thinking "no way". It didn't puke any codes. Popped the hood and saw that the new air filter had pulled the air hose away from the MAF sensor. Tightened all up, and I was on my way. Crap, I should have thought it though, and checked my connections. ZUG
