Default $800 to change thermostat at dealership!

You guys may be happy to hear that Im finally covered with full coverage car insurance through State Farm. I also enrolled in the drive safe program which is just like Progressives snap shot so I have a device plugged into my OBDII port. This compromises my ultragauge functions but im working on that. ANYWAYS I had to call the device hotline today to activate it and during the conversation the rep claimed he previously owned a Land Rover and paid the dealership $800+ just to change the thermostat! He claimed that they had to remove the manifold to do the job! I was like WHAT!? I nearly scolled him out over the phone and explained to him how easy it is to do the job at home. Cant believe these horror stories I keep hearing about mechanics and dealers..... who can you trust?

On another note is there anything in existence that I can buy to give me a second OBDII port? Id like to keep my Ultraguage installed as well as the device. I already purchased an extension which allowed me to mount my UG up high in the vehicle.

16 pin OBD2 OBDII Splitter Extension Cable Male to Dual Female Y Cable - USD $ 5.99

The first google result. I'm not endorsing the site or the product I have no idea about either.

Use one of these:
Amazon.com: OBDII Splitter Y Cable, J1962M to 2-J1962F, 1ft (145802): Automotive Amazon.com: OBDII Splitter Y Cable, J1962M to 2-J1962F, 1ft (145802): Automotive

By the way, he may have been talking about a D1. If the tech broke off the bolts then he may have had to pull the manifold to fix it. More likely though he just remembered getting repeatedly screwed by the dealership and recalls all repairs as being way overpriced.

He could have been talking about a freelander or Lr3/Lr4. Not all Land Rovers are as easy to work on as the disco.

If I had to pay $800 for a stupid thermostat, it better do a lot more than open and close. I'm thinking I should know how to cook and ski.

Holy Crap! Must have been a Freelander. I just looked at the parts list for a thermostat on that POS: Land Rover Freelander Thermostat Kit | Land Rover Engine Parts The housing is under the intake on the older V6.

Woof... yep. Looks like the manifold DOES need to come off for that. Not to mention after you're done that job the engine is going to explode anyways.
