'00 Disco SII Questions
I am going to replace the spark plugs, air flitler, brake pads and ignition cables on my Disco over the weekend. Is there any other maintenance that you experts your recomend?
How many miles?. The 60K service is a major one requiring much more than you mentioned. And--- if you are doing the pad replacement yourself , there is something you need to be aware of. The ABS modulator is a complex component and is part of your brake system circuit. Because sediment can form in the brake calipers it is necessary that you use a procedure to minimize the chances of any of this particulate from getting pushed ----back up into the modulator from the calipers when you retract the pistons . To do this, use a length of plastic tubing on the caliper bleed screw with one end submerged in brake fluid. You can buy a "bleeder kit" from most auto parts stores very cheap. Then--- crack the bleed screw open BEFORE you push the piston back into the caliper housing to make room for the new-thicker pad. Repeat this at each corner.
Land Rover sells hundreds of Modulators each month because of contamination that wastes the unit. And they cost more than a Mexican vacation for two-- to replace.

So what is involved in this 60,000 mile servicing. I ask since my week old '02 Disco is at 55k.
I'm chums with an excellent euro car mechanic who specializes in British cars. What should I have him do to meet the requirements of this 60k servicing?

Do either of you have your owners manuals, the services are described there in pretty good detail?
If either of yo plan to keep your truck for along time and want to make sure you won't have alot of problems, there are extra things that should be done.
Here is my list of items to do at 60K.
All fluids get changed, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, Ace fluid if you have it along with a filter, both diff's, the t/case, the trany and filter.
New air filter
new Bosh Platium Plus 4 spark plugs
New Magnacor 8 mm plug wires
An engine flush
An induction cleaning to decarbon the engine
Additives for the gas, power steering, engine oil and transmission
Inspect of brakes, hoses, belts pulley and tensioner
Inspection of both drive shafts, lube all fittings, check the double cardon and replace both u-joints if not yet done
Replacement of shocks and or springs, Rovers are always warn out by 60K
Thats a good start towards having a healthier Rover and remember the better the parts and fluids the longer she will last.

Disco Mike,
Since I don't plan to really modify my Disco very much, what should I look into for Shock/Spring replacements? Is there a brand or source for those components that you recommend? What is the cost I should anticipate?

My 00" just rolled over 105k. I have owned the vehicle for about 7 months there was no service record of any kind. I live at least three hours from the nearest Rover shop and in Kansas, people think that it is a Chevy.
So, needless to say, I will be my own Rover mechanic.
I have a road trip comming up and hunting season not far behind and I do not want to be stranded.
The vehicle runs ok, there is a wierd smell that has developed, kind of a sweet/pungent buring/melting plastic scent. There was a black spot beneath the tail pipe on the drive this morning.
What i really need is some help on what i need to do inorder to get this vehicle running well and within a reasonable cost.
Thanks
P.

I recommend you go to my web site at www.eurotekapg.com and read all of the tech info pages that are broken down into vehicle categories. This will give you a good primer on what to look for. The "sweet" smell you are referring to could be engine coolant leaking and dropping onto the hot exhaust. One area to check is the throttle body heater plate, as they are known to develop leaks, and there is a kit to repair it. It is located on the intake plenum (drivers side) right under the throttle postion switch.
