It sounds like you've already committed to buying but so this may be a little late but did you bother to price out a transmission before you committed yourself? These transmissions are not cheap even used. Your $2000 Discovery can become a $6000-$7000 Discovery in a hurry when you're talking about replacing major components like that

I made an offer but the seller and I have both agreed that I am in no way committed should this turn out to be too big of a financial burden. I did price out a tranny at Roverland Parts.

1999-2002 Discovery II Transmission Assembly Automatic (Professionally Rebuilt)

Would it be possible to rebuild the existing tranny? At what point is it not possible to rebuild?

Like you said it is most likely because of the front driveshaft breaking loose that the tranny is dead. If so you're going to find a big hole in the side of the case.

You will also need a new front driveshaft which can be had from a junk yard for $50, then you have it rebuilt for another $250.
Still cheaper than a brand new one or a Tom Woods driveshaft.

You might want to ask, and tell us why the old tranny is bad. It could be something simple, like low fluid??? More details..

The seller has a quote from Land Rover to replace the tranny. $6,000 leads me to believe that he had a serious issue with the tranny.
