02 sensor question
I had my check engine light come on yesterday but the truck was running fine. Anyway I went to autozone to have the codes read and it showed up that I had a bad second 02 sensor in bank one. I had them clear the codes but the light came on again shortly thereafter. I know that since I have 126000 on the truck I should look to have all the sensors replaced, however I had them replaced at the dealer from time to time over the course of owning it. Therefore, I dont think I need to replace them all because they arent as old as the truck. My question though is do these 02 sensors tend to go often? I have had problems with them at least five times (I know there are four but give me a break). Is there something else that could be causing them to wear out? I do have a K&N filter could that be some of the problem?
Ohh and I have never replaced one of these before.......is it difficult? Do I need special tools? Where should I get it from and what kind should I get? Thanks alot for the help.

What was the code exactly? The Bosch MAF's are sensitive. There is turmoil as to whether or not to use one. That's your call, butI say no way. Your O2 sensors should be replaced in sets. If it has been under a year, take it back to the dealer for warranty. They have at least that on all of their parts.
Not too hard to do, they should have a spanner type wrench for them at your local parts house. Use a lot of PB Blaster and that wrench, and you should be ok....

I called the dealer and I'm one month past the warranty period..........figures. When I was at the autoparts store I tried getting the actual code but the guy took the scan tool off before I could get it. I did manage however to see the screen briefly and it said............ 02 sensor, bank one/sensor 2. The guy then went in and priced a bosch 02 sensor at $175.00 (he said he would match any price I was able to find). Should I go back and get the actual code? I'm not sure if the thing even gave an actual reading like p0000. How much should I pay for a new sensor? Thanks alot for the help
I didnt replace all of them each time there was a problem. What I meant in the original post is that I would have an 02 sensor problem about every year (give or take) and the dealer would replace the faulty one. However, this happened several times and each time it was a different sensor that blew (that is of course if the dealer was telling the truth). So, all in all, my sensors cant be older than about 60,000 which is when I had the original faulty one replaced.
That is why you should replace in sets. I know it is more expensive, but you will get the best tune for your money. They start failing about 70K, and if you are close to that on your newest one, you should do all 4. A new sensor in series with an old sensor does not do as well as new paired, even then the banks will be off.
Have you talked to the dealer about your situation? They may at least give you another sensor if you have had them replace 5 of them. I would at least try to see how old the one that is bad is. Bank 1 sensor 2 is the driver's rear.
On the codes, before I bought my own scanner, they would turn their heads while I pushed the clear button.

I called the dealership and they said they couldn't help me ........ not surprised. Anyway, are the bosch oxygen sensors the original ones in the truck (bosch are the only ones that they have at my local auto parts store). They have 02 sensors for the D2 at atlantic british for $70 but they don't tell you what manufacturer made them. The guy at my parts store said he would match any price I find so I want to know if the ones that AB has are bosch. Thanks
I made a quick call over to AB and they said that the ones they carry are made by walker. Should I go with the bosch or the walker? Is there any difference? I havn't been able to get under the truck yet so I was wondering how hard it is to get to the sensors.......and do you guys have any suggestions for taking them out/putting them back in? I am going to be replacing both driver's side sensors (bank 1) so that the series is in line. Thanks for the help.
Quit doing it all wrong and buy a matched set of "4" new 02's from Atlantic British or Rover Connection, then you can start tracking down any problem, if it still exists at that point.
Do all 4 at once. That's what I said before.... and I would suggest getting them from ATB. They are a great company to deal with.
Another $140 is a small price to pay when you know they are all done. Then, if you are still having problems, you have a good starting point.
PB Blaster and a wrench. They sell O2 wrenches and I have heard they make it easier.
