According to my mechanic my fried '03 Disco S engine is labeled 4.0 instead of the expected 4.6. In searching for a replacement what should I be looking for?

 

2003 models have the 4.6L motor with a range of motors having bad oil pumps. Unfortunately I do not know of any way to check and see if it is a 4.6L other than looking up the VIN.

Hmmm, are you the original owner? If not there's a chance the oil pump failed and the engine was replaced with a 4.0L. I'd look for an engine out of an '04 unless you can verify the engine coming out of an '03 is beyond the bad VIN range.

 

Why is it fried? What did he say is wrong with it?

 

No good story here, just not paying attention when my coolant decided to vacate - Don't know if there is lower damage but it looks like I can get a reman engine w/~50k for not much more (<1k) than doing the heads alone - Any thoughts?

 

You dropped a cylinder sleeve. You need a new engine. Get the used one.

 

I think I will, thanks for your help - Also, in reference to my original post the VIN indicates an '03 and the motor is the original 4.6

 

If you are not the original owner, and someone blew their motor due to an oil pump, it is possible to stick a used 4.0 in as long as it is a Bosch. Same thing goes for the other way. My buddy just popped his 2000, and I am looking for a used 4.6 to replace it.
