Last night backing out of the garage the disco made a thumping noise that sounded like something was touching the fan. I stop for a second and pop the hood and don't see anything wrong. Noise slowly goes away, and I back down the driveway. When i put it in D it won't go. rev up the motor and barely creeps forward. Won't go backwards either. put it in low range and rev the hell out of it to get it into the garage for the night. After work today I inverstigate, and now it won't budge forward or backwards even at 3,000 rpm.

Things I checked:

Flywheel/torque converter bolts are all there and tight.

Drive shafts are not turning like there is a problem in one differential

Fluid and filter was recently changed and appeared normal.

Shifter cable is connecter and is moving the shaft on the transmission.

When i put it into gear, I dont' feel the motor slow down at all like its under a load. Before the motor slowed just a bit when putting into R or D.
What do I check next? Car drove and shifted peftectly for the last 15,000 miles we have put on it. Car has 126,000 on it now. I am afraid the tranny is toast, but I don't want to jump to conclusions. If the tranny is bad, I would think there would have been some funny behavior or warning signs. My wife drove it 30 miles round trip to work and back with no issues at all and just like that it won't budge.

Any ideas for next thing to check ?

 

Is the transfer case in neutral?

Or, will it move if you put the shifter into the lowest gear?

 

It's not in neutral. I have moved it from hi to low and back and forth. Last night that's how i got it in the garage was low range but it was crawling with the engine at 2500 rpm. When the t case is in neutral the lights and dinger comes On. Today it won't budge in high or low 1 2 3 D or R

Sounds like a bad torque converter or pump to me.

 

How can I check the pump to see if it's working ?

 

Does the rave outline a procedure removing one of the cooler lines ? I am traveling and don't have access to it at the moment
