Hey everyone! I am new here. Coming from the Toyota world! I just picked up an 03 Disco 2 with 40k miles on it!!!!
I have looked all over for any specific advice or help on getting the drivers side exhaust manifold out of the engine bay with little success. I’ve already got all the bolts out. From what I’ve read on other posts it looks like everyone just wiggles there out the same as the passenger side??Any help is much appreciated.
You mentioned getting all the bolts out, does that include the 3 nuts securing the manifold to the y pipe? Easy thing to miss. You can only access them from underneath and be-careful when taking them off. The studs like to snap when you take on or off the nuts. If you have you can lightly tap the flanges with a hammer to break any rust that may be holding it on. Then pull up not just out, as the studs are on the manifold side.
Yes y pipe is unbolted. Unfortunately snapped some y pipe studs upon removal hence the need to pull the manifold. Passenger side was a breeze but the driver side is no joke!
It's been a minute since I pulled mine. I did remove the air-box completely. I did not relocate the AC pump or the ACE pump on mine. It was a chinese puzzle, but I eventually got it so I know it can be done.
Sorry I can't be more help other than to say it can be done.
Welcome! I have good news and bad news. The good news is if you address the known engineering defects, typical known wear failures, and perform known maintenance requirements your D2 can be almost as reliable as a Toyota. The bad news the list of knowns can be fairly long and you should not wait for things to happen unless you consider breaking down to a fun challenge to overcome roadside. Start by reading every sticky at the top of the forum (especially mine ) Then read this https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...97/#post875543
More good news! I have the stainless studs and copper nuts you need for your exhaust manifolds. And it will come out, but you likely need to remove the spark plug wires and the SAI manifold. Be sure to hold the SAI fittings in the head with an open end wrench while you unscrew the big nut on the sai manifold. Not doing that risk bending the manifold irreparably. To do that the plugs need to come out. Also, good idea to ask the crew before doing any major work. If you had we would have told you to soak the manifold nuts in Aerokroil for three days minimum to eliminate breakage - oh well now you know to ask first.
I got it out through the bottom by removing the Heat Shield that is directly underneath the manifold!! Couldn't be more thrilled. I appreciate the welcome @Extinct .I will be ordering those new studs from you ASAP. As far as that goes any tips on removing the sheared studs?
I will 100% be asking for guidance before taking on any major projects. A little patience and penetrating oil would have saved me a lot of headache.
I would also get the stud threads as clean as possible, it actually makes a difference. Plus give it is slight tightening motion instead of going at it loosening full bore. Also if you heat the thread try melting some wax on them. It took me several days and every method known to man to get the heads off, luckily with not broken studs. Aerokroll is the best. I tried atf and acetone as well, Kroll is probably more helpful.
If it comes to it, its easier to cut the nut than replace a stud.
