Is the '03 oil pump issue overblown?

Isnt it just a stroke length kind of a difference?

All I can say about this is that since I have joined this forum there have been no less than 6 '03's with oil pump failure and at least 3 '04's.
There has been more than 2 '04's with a dropped liner as well.

The difference between the 4.0 and the 4.6 is the stroke, you can make a 4.6 by replacing the guts of a 4.0 with 4.6 parts.

My truck has over 200k on the original engine, I'm not sure if you meant how many miles on a Rover engine or on a 4.6 Discovery engine.

The P-38 Range Rover also came with a 4.6 and they are better built than the newer ones.
Quality control dropped off the chart after Ford bought Land Rover.
Ford wanted Jaguar but they had to take LR too, which then became the unwanted step child.

Any idea what the miles were on those oil pump failures? In talking to the service reps on other occasions they made it sound like overheating was the main cause of liner drops.

I do not know what caused the liners to drop.
The oil pump failures were from 45k-80k with the most happening in the 45-50k range.
One guy drove his truck 5 miles on the expressway with the oil light on and wondered why his engine was now a boat anchor.
On Discoweb there were at least 2 oil pump failures before I left that site years ago.

Keep in mind that most people do not take their truck to the dealer once out of warranty.
The service rep at a dealer will not know of those failures.

Personally I would not buy a '03-'04 but if I did own one I would not worry about it, I would just drive it and cross that bridge if I came to it.

Good points, so its a possibility, but I guess getting struck by lightning really happens to. I wonder what the actual percentage of failures is for '03. Any one know what the build numbers are.

I bought a 2003 DII a few weeks ago with 78K on the clock. I wanted a 2004 with CDL but this 2003 was super clean and has ACE, which I actually like the performance of.

I called the dealers in my area who serviced it since it was new and one of them reported a new oil pump was installed recently, before the truck went off extended warranty with the PO.
I had been warned of the '03-04 MY having catastrophic pump failures, but I guess mine simply had the pump go without taking the engine with it. I fall in the affected VIN range.
Maybe I dodged a bullet... yeah, right.

First post, btw. Love this forum!
Loooooong time lurker - I have a Freelander too and have been here a lot over the years for info to keep that pile of sh*t on the road. Anybody want it? I'd take $1000

Based on the amount of new threads since spike555 joined, the 6 '03 pump failures makes up .042% of all new threads. I bet head gasket post are closer to 25%

I would assume slipped liners are due to overheating. The hot metal expands and loses its grip on the liner at which point it moves down. Just like when you heat a piston on a gas engine in order to slide the wrist pin in or heat a harley engine case in order to press the bearings in easier. I would say as long as your engine never over heats that a slipped liner is not likely at all. At the same time I could see where it over heating just one time could cause it. My suggestion.. change your thermostat if it's time to. Maybe sooner! Check your drive belts for cracks. Keep that cooling system in tip top shape.
