Good advice, the over heating just makes sense with dissimilar metals of the liner and head.

Yes I did. A dozen or so complaints about oil pump failure is not a very encouraging. But, I bought it not knowing about this and will just have to take it as it comes.

forget the chevy, I have the 5.0L from my ' 94 wrecked cobra sitting in the barn waiting for a home. Wonder if it would fit in a discovery.

yes it's me, the guy who sold his '03 5 days after purchasing it.... I was a bit tripped with all the bad publicity about it, but as I looked over the car before buddy came over with the cash, I noticed significant oil drippage on the bottom of the oil pan. could be a gasket, could be something else. I made $800.00 on it, and now I see advertised on Kijiji Toronto for 2600.00 more than I paid for it less than a week ago. I really liked the ride of the truck and have since purchased an 02 with less mileage, better condition and a straight up maintenance record. Only issue is shifter cable from 4x4 low range is broken... is that an issue to replace... I'll make another post. Thanks for the balance of opinions, that's why we are all here!

Over heating certainly does no good to the engine. I would assume that any 2003/2004 for sale at the moment has over heated at least once, but most likely multiple times. As far as the oil pumps go, your truck has 100k on it and its still going, I don't think it has an oil pump problem.
I bought my 2003 with a dead engine and replaced the short block with one from a 4.6 RR, the same 4.6 was used in the RR up to 2002 and allegedly the quality was better. The truck was $2000 plus $200 for the short block, then add about $1500 for parts and machine work and I have a tight engine. The PO had spent about $3500 on repairs to the engine before selling it, all I could see done were hgs and one new lifter, plus a whole lot of damage done in the engine bay by some idiot.
Dropping a 5.0 Cobra engine in a Disco is sacrilege

Sacrilege yes, I really want to hold on to this motor untill I have the time and extra cash to drop it in an Factory Five AC cobra kit. But, untill then I have though about dropping it in my toyota and maybe the discovery if need be. Cant imagine the modification needed for such a swap, so not a real option. But, I do like the idea of pulling up to a unsuspecting camaro or something in my old beat up yota and smoking them off the line.....It would be the ultimate sleeper.

I agree the oil pump issue is overblown, especially at this point; 8 years and xxx miles.

As for liners, if you've a DII or Thor P38 the liners cant slip as they are shelved on these engines so it's a non issue.

The highest I've personally seen was a '99 DII with 238,000. Moderate cam wear, leaking head and valley gasket and could have used rings and a new timing chain but I was impressed. I would have driven it across the country and back with no concerns. That being said it was obvious that the engine had been very well maintained.

Um.... wanna see some photos of a 2003 liner that slipped? Slip they can, believe me.

My opinion is, if it gets hot enough the liner can slip.
