Biggest no start problem with a new Rover is a crank sensor. It will cause stalling and no starts but sometime restart when the engine cools off. It will also shut off the fuel pump.

Mike, I appreciate the input - now it will start - very rough, spits back, then will settle to an idle. No pwer - I needed to pull it up the driveway and it doesn't have enough to go up a VERY slight incline. Even feathering the accelarator will not get it up the drive...

I did, prior to it starting, remove the access plate to the fuel pump. That is ALL that I did - tried to start, heard the fuel pump kick on - it took several attempts but I could tell it was trying to fire - then it did, died and restarted a few times - then it would hold idle - still not enough power to get up the drive - even reving in nuetral and dropping into gear - no power....

any thoughts on that?

Is there a test for the crank sensor?

The sensor is underneath cyl 7 above the y shaped exhaust pipe. Its a bitch to get to and the connection is way up beside the engine. I have heard of someone hooking the sensor once it is unbolted and disconnecting the wires from above. You will also need to note where the spacers go as you remove the sensor cover and sensor. I believe it takes a 7mm and 8mm socket and an extra elbow about midway up your wrist.

I would suggest a throttle position sensor is you're able to get an idle, but have no power when you get on the throttle. Is your check engine light on? A failed Crank position sensor would either let it run or not, not sputter and miss and die. It's kind of an on or off deal.

tornado_735 - it will start, run very rough momentarily, then die. No power and give it any throttle and it dies.

the check engine light is on. i do not have a code reader.

again - thanks all.

this is kind of like trying to do surgery when you are not a surgeon...

There was a quote somewhere that I read on here.

"Don't give up. It's just a machine."

You can call me Aaron :-)

Code readers can be rented from Auto Zone. You have to leave a deposit, but you get that deposit back in full when you return the code reader.

If you can get your mitts on one, do it. We'll tell you how to use the scanner.

Aaron, prior to this issue it did have a check engine light and I needed to get her inspected. Took it to an advantage auto parts and they read the codes as P 1412 and P1415 - my "inspector" suggested that I diconnect the battery to clear the codes and that worked - I did drive it about 300 miles w/o the CEL coming back on.

Thanks again - I will try to get my hands on a code reader...
