04 Disco Falling Apart
I bought my 2004 series II in 2008 with 48k miles, 3 months later I lost my exhaust manifold gasket.... $900 to replace. I had to do the brakes shortly after that myself. I live 75 miles from Cherry Hill Land Rover and just dropped it off because no one down here will touch it. From what I was told by a local shop, my cat is bad, o2 sensors are bad and my valve cover gasket is practically gone (1qt a week being added). I have about 75k miles on it now. Does anyone know the approximate cost to fix these problems, I believe the dealer is $105/hr. I am fairly good with fixing small issues, but the valve cover seemed too in depth. I believe my cat will fall under the gov't warranty, but the o2 sensors will not. I'm just dreading putting another few thousand into it.
On another note, does anyone know any good off-road tires that will fit on stock height, I have the 18" rims and the low pro tires killed me in the snow this year........
Thank you

Valve cover gaskets and O2 sensors are easy to replace - just download the RAVE manual and you can do both in about 2 hours. Check with Atlantic British for parts - they were running a special on O2 sensors recently. Any muffler shop can replace the CAT, but I'd replace the sensors first. Did your indy shop give you the error codes?

Cape-go to Sears and buy a 12 point 8 mm deep well socket in 1/4" drive, and a 1/4" drive socket set if you dont have one already.
That socket fits the valve cover bolts, tighten them up, the leaks will stop.
Then snug them back up every oil change, they wiggle loose, this happens on every single Land Rover ever.
$3 for the socket.
95% of all O2 codes on a LR are due to the really bad need of a tune up, that means new spark plugs and spark plug wires.
We highly recommend Magnecore plug wires from www.apexperformance.net, get the 8mm wires, they are the cheapest place to get them.
You can use any spark plug you want, copper plugs are $2 each at AutoZone.
Read through the write up section on the top of the page and see if you think you can handle this.
Otherwise print it up and take it to your mechanic and tell him you will buy the parts if he does the work.
Until you do a tune up and then clear the codes do not do anything else.
Now here is why, when the spark plugs cant spark correctly the engine will run super rich.
Running super rich will lower your MPG and set off O2 codes. It sets off the codes because excess fuel is being sent to them and this throws them out of wack, as well as the cats.
To much fuel and the cats will overheat and burn themselves out and then they will need to be replaced.
Now the dealer is going to want $1200 for a tune up.
If you do it it will cost you $200 and a days work.
You can send me $500 and still come out ahead.
And make sure that you are using only premium gas as it is required.

Awesome thank you
Pretty sure I can handle that found the tune up kit on rover parts, now I just have to get in touch with the dealer first thing tomorrow to tell them not to work on it unless they can do the CAT for free under that Govt Warranty..... I'm closing in on the 80K mile limit and My other mechanic was pretty sure its done just by the way it smelled

Under 2 hours? I wish. Remember, he has an 04 with Secondary Air I assume, making the process more time consuming. You can't get to the valve cover bolts to tighten without removing the upper intake and the the Secondary Air tubes have to come off to get the upper intake off. A royal pain compared to 4.0s without secondary air.

Ok I'm getting the rover back from the dealer on Wednesday. They called me today and told me that they would not fix my CAT because it's does not qualify for the warranty due to the condition the rest of the exhaust is in so for now I got the parts I need to do the plugs and wires prob weds night. I'll ask him for the codes when I pick it up so I know if there's anything else going on.
My cell is 609-602-5940 anytime weds afternoon.....
