12 mpg hwy!?

Just to throw my 2 cents in:
My DiscoII has 129,000 miles, I drive the snot out of it daily on the job, 2,500 miles a month. Combination city, interstate, and some offroad, air-con on full blast, 75mph typically on the highways, and I check it at every fill-up. I consistently average 16mpg.
I'm actually happy with that result, since I used to have a 1992 Suburban that got between 9-12mpg at best, under a light foot... And with only 2WD.
PS: I've tried driving the Disco easy, and slower on the hwy. (60-65), and my mileage improves by maybe a half a mile per gallon or a hair more.
So... Heck with it, I pour it on.

Yes sir they have two live axles, permanent four wheel drive.
Also, Yes, an aftermarket exhaust would free up some MPG's. It wouldn't give you much without throwing a cam in there along with it, and it would have to be headers and the high-flow cats. Probably not something that would pay itself off too fast though, but it would give the disco some extra pep and a throaty sound.

I was thinking it would have to be headers out for it to make any real difference but I wasn't sure if they are factory tuned in such a way that messing with the back pressure would mess anything up. I appreciate your response. Cheers.

You would gain more than half a mile per gallon with a free flowing exhaust in itself. I'd say 2-3 without a cam, that is with headers included, not the catback exhaust stuff sold in a kit.
Imagine, filling a 25 gallon tank at $3.84 a gallon, 96$ a full tank, while getting 15mpg, that's 375 miles a tank, and $0.25 a mile. Now add even 2mpg to that, increases the distance of one full tank of gas to 425 miles per tank, and be $0.22 a mile.
Will it pay itself off? In efficiency? Maybe not anytime soon, but it will give you a better distance per tank, a throaty V8 sound (to each his own, if you dislike or like), more low end torque, and more gains if you did do a performance engine build.

I just got 16 on a road trip, all highway miles. Bone stock 4.6 engine and exhaust.
Maybe it would be better to consider getting the best out of your existing setup before spending large sums of money.
If I can get 16 going 65 to 75 mph, you should be able to too. Once you get to that level then start spending money if you aren't yet satisfied.
