My 04 did act up in the -15 to -20 Celsius. Not the best electronics in these

 

Was out in Carson, WA this weekend. Temps dipped down into the (positive) single digits. After clearing the snow off of my vehicle she started up with a minor struggle. Instrument cluster, and front and rear defrosters did not work for a couple of minutes. HVAC turned on without issue. After a couple of minutes, the instrument cluster came alive and the defrosters worked. Never experienced cold like that with my D2 in the 9 years I've owned it. Also, door cylinder lock was impossible to turn with key (keyless entry is inop). Got home and warmed it up with my heat gun, used 3-In-1 dry lock lube. Works fine now.

 

My electronics have been ok but I did get the engine not warming up fast enough code - or as I told my wife The "It is too F'n cold code"

 

So , having cold weather problems , is there any preventive measures to take to keep the dash instruments inoperable ?? A squirt of WD - 40 prevents the tumblers from freezing , that's easy .
Also , on a side note as I have mentioned before , at these below freezing temps , my "Three Amigos " never show up . What's with that ??

 

Have you done any preventative measures for the 3 amigos? Usually its an electrical grounding error fixed by the "Option B" fix. It's possible that the metals are contracting so much that the ground is staying in contact so the system is staying functional. Also, I'm just north of you here in Washington, I took my D2 out once this past weekend and my door handle was basically frozen shut, I was afraid I was going to pull the whole thing off trying to open it! Also, my window was a bit stiff and I had condensation frozen to the windshield inside. I normally have a moisture absorber in the truck but forgot to open it (oops). Luckily it was nothing the heated windshield couldn't take care of and having the heated seats sure was nice too!

I would agree sounds like a cold solder issue, micro cracks that may be almost or completely invisible to the eye btw. Probably inside instrument cluster (location is obvious), maybe on BCU (lower passenger right kick panel). Could also be loose connections on back of cluster, I might try that first. In my case, I had water ingress into the fusebox under the drivers side dash panel, which was causing a # of issues, it was corroded and in cold weather, it was having a harder time operating uhh correctly. So I'd get weird stuff like rear windows not working and warning lamps and brake lights not working whenever it was cold. I'd say any of the 3 components (cluster, BCU, fuse box) might be your issue.

Has it gotten wet inside in the past year from roof or windshield leaks?

 

No inside leaks anywhere. But , I should go over every fuse and connection.

 

Latest update....after temps have risen to a high of 31 degrees in Portland Oregon , my driver side window has now decided to work . No Amigo's yet , though . So what have I learned ??? That 31 degrees seems to be the "optimal" temperature for the Discovery 2 to run without any glitches. Warm enough to chase away cold soldering , but cool enough to keep the 3 amigo's at bay.

 

Maybe the battery or the alternator is the problem in your case (battery not fully charged, limited battery capacity due to age) and/or there are wiring problems caused by frozen moisture. I never had any issues at freezing temperatures, I started the car at 10 deg. F recently in the morning without any problems.
