Question 170 degree thermostat in '00 Disco?

Hello, I recently picked up a '00 Discovery and I'm loving it so far. Like many others have done, I'm thinking of doing the Inline thermostat mod. The 180 degree version seems to be the norm, and I'm sure it would work very well, but I'm curious to hear from those who have the 170s.

I'm leaning toward the 170 in my '00 because I know the '03-04s will throw a code below 180, so it seems like it could be a slight advantage over the newer models. But how bad does it really affect the MPG at this temp? Anyone with a 170 thermostat wanna share their average MPG? Obviously I didn't buy this car for it's fuel efficiency lol, but I am worried that the 170 would keep it a little too cool.

So, convince me why I should or shouldn't get the 170 in my 2000 Discovery . Thanks! Any insight is appreciated!

I have 170's in both my 00's. I get 17.5 on the highway at 70mph with 255/65/16 Michelins on one and 17mpg on the other with Firestone Destinations of the same size. 12.5-13.5 mpg on my daily commute of 8 miles with a mix of highway and city. No significant downside. Go for it.

I don't usually push it that low, typically fill up around 340-350, although I have pushed it as far as 390, bit a nail biter at that distance.

Just because you throw in a lower temp t-stat doesn't mean the truck will run cooler. Once the spring is open on the t-stat (170, 180 etc) then its just flowing coolant through the system -- everything else will depict how cool your engine will run (radiator, water pump etc)

Correct. A lower temperature thermostat does not mean coolant/engine will run cooler. Coolant will flow into radiator path sooner after cold start; and nothing else. An open thermostat does absolutely nothing.
Coolant temperature is dictated by ambient, speed, air flow, climb rate, lead foot, coolant flow, towing...
