Default What temp Thermostat do I have??

Hey all,

Proud new owner of a 2001 Disco II - something I've wanted to say since I was 15. Anyway, I hooked up my OBD reader and truck is driving around town at 224 degrees F!! Previous owner said he replaced thermostat and other coolant components recently (which worries me if it overheated). I'm trying to figure out what thermostat he put in, and I'm thinking if I put in a 180 F thermostat, it may help with how hot it gets. Or I'm also considering doing the inline thermostat.

The thermostat has the following code on it: PA66-GF30. I looked it up and the one related thermostat is one made for a ford fiesta but it doesn't look the same as the one in the truck. So, my ultimate question: Is there any way to figure out what type of thermostat he put in? If it's already a 180 F one, I'll do the inline. If it's not a 180 F tstat, I'll start with installing one of those. Any help is appreciated. The last thing I want to do is overheat the Disco I just got.

What color is the thermostat? LR OEM 195F Thermostat is white/tan, LR OEM 180F Thermostat is light grey. Britpart 180F Thermostat is black, and most Motorad (horrible thermostats) are white/tan.

I recommend the LR OEM Grey thermostat or the Britpart 180F. Also check your fan clutch/fan blade, TBH for leaks, and make sure the shroud around the radiator is intact.

It looks just like the one the link below - which also happens to have the same number.

So it seems like its the OEM 195F thermostat? Maybe next step is to get the 180F thermostat?

I'll check the other things you mentioned too. Thanks!

Yep that's 195F if I had to guess. Grab a 180F unit from Lucky8.

I got the 180 from lucky8 and the truck runs consistently at 186. Don’t buy crap and no offense to AB but, lucky8 doesn’t charge for shipping and that is why I buy 90% of my products from them

I bought mine off e-bay for $38. It was the black britpart 180 and the best item I've swapped out on my '03. I was running 209's and occasionally higher, but now constantly 185 or less which is great for down here in the tropics.

this is a more general reply to Thermostat posting .... I have never ever heard of so many complaints about dysfunctional thermostats of one type for one car model... seems that this is witch craft. I am 60, am on car number 7 or so and I have two other at this moment. I have NEVER had to replace a thermostat, NEVER. Truly strange happenings

We aren't changing the thermostats due to them failing (although I have seen my share of stuck 195F thermostats that people didn't change out after a HG failure or when using Dexcool Coolant). We change them to 180F units to keep the engines running as cool as possible. Also LR D2's aren't getting any younger and depending on the condition of the cooling system and condition of the coolant a thermostat could fail.

I'm sadly amazed at the amount of people that aren't car savvy that want a LR just for a status symbol. They never have the LR checked out before purchase, and if the HG's do go out they do the job as cheap as possible and DO NOT actually fix the issue that caused the HG's to fail in the first place! Dexcool turns to sludge/slime when there is any kind of leak in the cooling system where air can get into the cooling system, be it from the famous TBH, the coolant lines to the reservoir or radiator vent line. The radiator will quickly get clogged and eventually the thermostat will stick and BOOM goes the HG or the engine just because someone didn't spend another 300.00 tops on repairing the entire cooling system.
