18 inch rims vs 16 inch rims on winter snows

18 inch rims vs 16 inch rims on winter snows
I live in a cold section of the world (Ottawa Canada) and have to start looking at winter tires for my recently purchased 2000 Discovery II. It currently has Goodyear Wrangler HP 255 55R 18s.
Any suggestions for a winter tire - do I go down to a 16 inch winter rim or do I stay with the 18 inch rim but purchase a winter rim along with a winter snow tire?
My experience with other cars (BMW, Volvo, Subaru) - real snows outperform "all-season". I have not driven a Discovery in the winter.

As I did with mine, I sold the 18" wheels and tires and bought a nice set of used Rover alloys wheels. There is a much better selection of tires, sizes, treads and prices with 16" wheels. Besides the fact that the prices are better, the tires are stronger, have better side walls for more protection, ride better because of the extra side wall.
Buy some 16"s, you will like the difference, Oh, I forgot to mention, 16" tires last alot longer then 18's.

I have 16s on my '97 and running BFG AT KOs (http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/bfgap...erraintako.jsp). Good all round tire. Does well on snow, wet pavement, and offroad. The only 18" tire they have in the AT is the LT285/65R18/D which is a 32.8" diameter tire, so these won't fit your Disco (unless you have a tall lift kit). I have seen 16" used rims for sale for a reasonable price in the past. Probably would be worth finding a set in the long run (16" tires are usually cheap than 18" tires).

That's good advice. I think I will keep the 18 inch rims and Wranglers and use them in the summer until they done, but purchase 16 inch rims (used if possible) and put winter snows on them.
The BFG KOs are a possibility. When I had a Volvo 740 Turbo, I had HAKKAPELITTAs and they were great. I'm learning more and more each day about my Disco II and still not sure what the best tire will be.

I would not recomend switching back and fourth between the 18 and the 16, unless you have your speedometer callibrated every time you do the change it will not reflect the true speed
