1994 Discovery - What to look for - Advice
Hello all...
I am new to the site and need some assistance... I am wanting to buy a 1994/5 Discovery (I am upgrading from a Cherokee). But before I do I want to see what I need to look for. The one I am interested in is about 90 miles away so I can't just go and check out any time...
Little discription on it. Carfax says nothing that jumps out. She has 115,000 miles on it. Body wise it is in good shape, the inside is clean, Everything works except for the front moonroof (not too worried about that). He did mentioned that there is a small clanking noise coming from underneath the car... I don't know it this is the heat sheild loose (like my Cherokee had)or the catalyic converter is rattleingor what, but this concerns me? Does any one have expierence with this?
Also, buying a 1994, what should I be looking for and what to be careful with? And is this year a good year for the Discovery? Any alladvice will beappreciated!!!
Thank you in advance,
5West...

Doesn't sound too bad. Low mileage for the year. Not sure about the clanking, that could be nothing, and it could be something you want to avoid. Is the check engine light on?
As for it being a good year for the Discovery, a Discovery I (94 to mid 99) is the same as any other DI you can find, aside from the trim package (S, SE, etc). Just so you know they do require premium gas. Maintenance is key in them as well. If you keep up with it this truck will go 300,000 or more miles no problem. I feel like I'm leaving something out, some one else gimme a hand

Thank you for the reply.
No... He said that there is not a check engine light on. I just got off the phone with him and he said that the noise is not too noticable. only at a certain speed and can really only hear it when you are in the passager seat.

Take a Half Inch Ratchet with you and check to see if there is gear oil in the Differentials. While you are under the truck yank on the Propeller Shafts to see if the clanking noise is a bad Universal Joint..
Negotiate the price down enough so you can replace all the fluids.. and put new wires and plugs in it.
Set aside 200-300 bucks for those items
If you pay someone else to do it, be prepared..
Are you Mechanicly Minded??
Pretty simple technology...
Youve picked the right year as far as im concerned..
94 has a Distributer.. it predates the Electronic Ignition
For me that was a good thing.. Its simple..
Its basicly a Buick V8, but Aluminum so its lighter.
The body panels on the diso are also Aluminum, thats why you wont see rust in the typical places.. You have to go looking for it.
Make sure you get everything lubricated early on, and you should have a nice ride..
Expect about 12 miles to the Gallon
an appearantly.. they only like Premium Gas

The sunroof rails going bad is a common problem with DI's.
The ABS going bad is another. Just pull the fuse and not have ABS.
The cruise control not working is common, 90% of the time a easy DIY fix.
Premium gas is required, no way around it.
DI's are pretty simple trucks, just one step removed from your grandpa's 1950's Chevy.
They like lots of love and TLC.
Condiditon the leather every 6 months, lube the latch and handle on the cargo door every 6 months too.
www.atlanticbritish.com has everything you could ever need or want for a LR.
I HIGHLY recommend reading their tech tips on the home page.
