1998 disco needs help
Hey guys! I have a question. I went under the hood of my 1998 disco the other day to check the oil and there was a reddish powder dustedall over the motor, hoses, etc. I wiped it all off thinking i might have picked up something while driving, and to see if it came back. Well.........it did! It looks like it is coming from the front of the engine.(powder is only on the front of the hoses) At first i thought maybe tranny fluid,(because of the color)but why powdery and not wet. I am pretty new to the disco world and this might be simple for someone with disco experience. but i'm lost. Any ideas?
sure you aren't driving through Alabama?
Only thing I can think of is that something is corroding/rusting. If it isn't just dirt from something...
Wouldn't be tranny fluid because it wouldn't evaporate like that and leave dust.

The friction material in the A/C compressor clutch is usually ferrous andgives offa red dust when it wears. It would be very unusual to see it dusting the entire engine compartment, but it is a possibility.

It might be worth checking the fan clutch bearings. When I replaced mine this summer, the bearings were fused (tight) and it was rather rusty inside and around the shaft. It should spin when cold. Let us know what it turns out to be.
BTW, are you in WI?
