Default 1999 Discovery Series 2 Not Starting

Hello,

I wanted to get some thoughts on my discovery (1999) series 2 not starting. Battery seems to be fine, and I tried to jump it. When we turn the key nothing happens. I'm guessing it's the starter. Is there anything special that I need to know about taking out the starter?

Thanks for your help

be very sure you need a starter, make sure to test signal wire to starter.
remember to disconnect battery first before removing main cable nut.
the two bolts holding starting are special 8mm allen headed bolts when the dirt collects on the hole
you might not put the allen in all the way and then its stripped.
brake loose the hard one on top first then the easy one.

Thanks. I was going to test it and make sure it's the starter (the batter is in good shape) but this is great advice. Especially about the allen bolts.

Make sure your neutral safety switch is ok before you drop the starter. Shift the selector all around, try neutral and make sure it is all the way back into park.

Never take anything for granit. Have you reset the inerita switch on the passanger fire wall? Pull the battery, check and clean all the terminal and grounds, take the battery down and have a load test done on it before you even think about the starter.

I have cleaned the battery/cables etc and tried jumping it (all electrical is working good). It doesn't crank at all. Isn't the inertia swtich to turn off the fuel pump? If that was tripped, wouldn't it still crank?

I was also just outside looking at the starter and was wondering how you get the heat shield off (the one covering the starter)

Thanks for all your help.

the shield is held on with one small bolt to the engine mount, but you don't
need to remove this to take out the starter it just pulls off the starter solonoid.
it will take a great amount of forch to brake loose the starter bolts
so if it turns out to need htat starter you will need that 8MM allen on a 3/8 socket
and a small extention for the top bolt.

Thanks all for you replies. Turned out to be some type of grounding/cable issue. Starter was fine. Everything is working great!
