Default 1999 Discovery Stereo help!!

I have a 1999 Discovery - Series I - with the stock stereo in it. The stock stereo is a radio/tape deck with 6 disc cd changer(under the passenger seat) and 5 speakers, which includes the built-in rear door subwoofer speaker.

I want to change the stock stereo and put my own stereo in with a front loading cd player and ipod input. I don't care to use the existing 6 disc cd changer under the passenger seat anywmore. I know you can buy coverter cables to hook up a new stereo into the existing speaker system. But the company who sells the cables asked if there was a separate amp installed in the vehicle, because that would require a different cable. They have 2 different options, one with amp integration and one without. I only see the cd changer under the passenger seat and can't see a separate amp anywhere, and the stereo isn't very loud so I would assume there isn't a separate amplifier. But the salesperson from the cable converter company told me that if there is a subwoofer speaker in the vehicle rear door then there must be a separate amplifier to power it.

Does anyone know if this is true? This is my 3rd used Land Rover Discovery, all three with the same exact stock stereos, all three had the same built-in subwoofer speaker in the rear door, and all three stereos were not very loud so I never assumed there was a separate amplifier in the vehicle.

Can anyone help me? Does anyone know if there is a separate amplifier in these vehicles? It would greatly help in knowing which cable converter to buy.

Thank you!

i just put an aftermarket stereo in my 99 also. the only thing you need is the harness that is amplifier integrated. the harness is made by Metra and the number is 70-9400. everything works great except i have a lot of engine noise so i will install a noise filter and see if that helps.

I have a 97. There is an amp behind the glove box, and the amp for the subs is mounted to the back of the subs.

Thank you for the info!

Does the built-in rear door subwoofer speaker still work with the new stereo?

I am still factory. I did bypass the rear door amp, install a new one, and have an 8" in the back.
