Been looking at my options for mounting "3" 20 liter Jerry gas cans to my roof rack. I found this kit from Atlantic British but its made by BajaRack so Im not sure if it would work with my Sd rack. http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/BAJAFCH If not what else is out there? I would like to avoid having to pay a fab shop to make custom brackets. Also note that I plan on fitting a full size spare tire and 1-2 wolf pack storage boxes on the rack as well. Thoughts?

Dumb question perhaps: Can I use the green Nato Jerry cans to store fuel? Or do I need to look for cans that say CARB approved? Does it matter? Typically you would put fuel in red containers but seeing how I wont be storing water and I prefer green cans to red I dont think it would harm anything.

I have the Baja dual jerry can holder for my Baja rack. It is sturdy and should mount to the SD rack. You can have to re-locate/re-drill the mounting holes to accommodate the SD floor spacing.

Another alternative is the Rotopak.

 

I have a few like these but without the hinge. Simple strap goes over the Nato can and holds it in place. Not expo portal approved I'm sure but cheap and easy. Found mine for around $10 apiece.

those work fine for fuel, same vessel....mine used to be that color, but have been scratched naked and resprayed a few times

Thanks for the tip army rover, I'll consider those straps if I don't like anything else.

As for the cans themselves. Ab sells carb approved fuel cans and normal NATO cans of same size. Both are green but the NATO cans are described by AB as being for water and are cheaper vs the carb cans.

 

That CARB crap is just that, crap. Get the plain green ones a few extra seals a spout or two and call it a day.

 

At one point I was seriously considering one of these 15 gallon top side marine fuel tanks, low profile, built in baffles so no swashing, permanent mount to roof rack:

And a gravity fed handle to pump direct into the LR fuel tank:

Of course you had to move the hose connection to the lowest point on the tank but that's an easy DIY.

 

I like that idea... the 15 gallon tank perm mount. Why didn't you?

Maybe someday, but ultimately I went with the lift and mud claws first, next is a steel bumper and winch, a rear steel bumper, and down at the end of the list is plans like this for when I may actually be more than 10 miles from a gas station.
