Default 2000 4.0L V8 origin

I was surprised to read that the 4.0L V8 in my 2000 SD7 was of General Motors origin/design instead of what I thought was maybe a BMW base engine (BMW was the corporate owner of LR in 2000 - right?) Can anyone give a lowdown on this engine?

1960's Buick rocket 8. 3.9, 4.0, and 4.6 are all the same engine. It's nothing more than a good old GM pushrod.

Amazing! I remember the old Buick V8's being referred to as "nailheads", and I always associated "rocket" with Oldsmobile. So are these smaller bore or de-stroked versions of what displacement GM block?

Actually they started out as a Buick 215 CID (3.5L) so I think they're bored and stroked, not reduced in displacement. See Wikipedia:

Rover has used this engine for a long time, changing the stroke to increase the CID up thru the 4.6, then they went to Jag.

Yeah Rover used the engine for a total of 40 years in one form or another I think I read.

Mike, so if it's just stroked, then does this mean the 3.9 heads from my 95 Disco will just bolt on to a 4.6 short block? (plug & play fashion?) What I'm getting at could I drop in a 4.6 rover shortblock in place of my 3.9 block and keep the same intake & ECU etc? Do you think there would be any significanthp/torquegains from this? Do the 4.6 heads have bigger valves?

I read where a guy replaced his 4.0 with a 4.6. I think the only thing he had to change was going to a D2 knock sensor fo clearance. It still had the 4.0 heads, intake and ECU. I'll see if I can find it again.

I believe your 3.9 has a distributor, that being the case, a 4.6 is not set up with the drive gears from the cam to drive a distributor so you are limited to a 4.0 with the correct cam drive system.

Yeah damn it! I forgot about the mechanical ignition system, been so long since I had a car with one on it! Thanks for the info Mike. Guess I could always look at a 4.2 RRC motor?
