Default 2000 Disco II tranny service, transfer case

It's been about 25000 since my last tranny oil change, and God only knows when(and if) the transfer case fluid has ever been replaced. I dumped the front and rear difs fluid a short while ago, as it was quite easy thing to do, used fully synthetic gear oil, but I cant figure out how to do the transfer case.
Also, a Land Rover mechanic told me that the tranny service has to be done just right or I risk ruining the transmission. In other words, he told me to come to him only and not to do it myself. What does a proper tranny service require, given that the last one was done at the Land Rover shop and cost me over $400? Should I do it myself, hire a local mechanich, or submit to the Land Rover specialist (who seem arrogant and greedy)??
What to do with the transfer case, the same dilema?
As I am driving, whenever I press on the accelelator, there is a fairly timid whining noise that seems to come from under the car. It's not loud enough to clearly spell danger, is it normal, or is it transfercase/front dif/u-joint trying to die on me???
Thanks in advance for all the answers.

I'm getting that too I think, is it when you barely have the accelerator to the floor? That is when mine is doing it. It is really barely noticeable. I have replacing tranny fluid on the list, but I need my Rave CD to get here, or find a manual. Post an update as you move through this one if you can.

Cheers,
Josh

1943,
You are loosing your front drive shaft, you might call me as I suggested before you get hit with a failure and the old familiar $7000 estimate for repairs.

What time is a good time to call you? How can I be sure I am really losing the shaft, is there a way to visually confirm/diagnose the problem? It's my main driver right now...

They seem to be running between $100 and $200 on eBay, though I couldn't really find one for my car at this time... How much are they new at the stealer's, and what other Rover models are Disco 2s interchangeble with? For example, I found this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OEM-R...spagenameZWD1VWouls something like that fit? Thanks again

How do you know when you are supposed to change out the fluid?

Is it an easy thing to do for someone that isn't very mechanically inclined?

Thanks!

Are you talking about the tranny fluid? LR recommends about 25,000, I believe. Some people seem to do it more often, A LOT of people do it far, far less oftenThey say it isn't hard, except you need to get the fluid level right, and there isn'ta dipstick.

1943- That shaft will not work. Take it to a driveline specialist and have them replace the U-joints with ones that have grease fittings. The originals did not have these fittings. A driveshaft place can fix all that you will need, and far less than the dealer. Popping a used one in that hasn't been re-built won't fix it, you'll end up with the same situation real quick.

Tranny fluid has a level plug on the transmission. If you drain and fill the tranny, you have to get a pump and pump it back in, start the truck, run it to warm and keep topping it off. Shift through the gears NOT MOVING the truck. Make sure fluid is barely coming back out of the fill hole and replace the plug. If you are at the mileage, you will have to drop the pan and replace the filter as well. Some shops do flushes. I don't recommend this (personal opinion). You could dislodge something and mess the tranny up. Oh, and you only change about half our fluid when you drain it, the rest stays in the torque converter. To really do it right, you have to do it 3 times. [:@]1- 50% old, 2-25% old, 3-12.5% old.

Not easy if you aren't mechanical. But mine is a D1 and I have a dipstick so i don't have to do all of that......ppllllllbth!

I'll be getting on it. I thought my friendly neighborhood LR mechanic (not a dealer) charged me over $400 for a tranny service. Turns out, it wasn't the case; they charged me ONLY $245 for the service labor, additional $75for tranny kitand fluids, and they charged me $98 for computer diagnostics on a "$10,000 machine," which they kept mentioning. It was that magic machine that told them that my trans fluid was old and needed replacement (???), and which is why supposedly my "check engine" light was on, in addition to the O2 sensors being bad. To top it all off, they threw an additional 35.55 for "other shop labor & materials," for good measure. Finally, $12.50 to change engine oil & filter (myown oil and filter). So the bill came up to $474.80, total.
So what you guys think, did I get ripped off or what? In other words, would it be particularly stupid of me to come back to that establishment?
