2000 Disco II will not shift out of park
My 2000 Disco II is stuck at the office and will not shift out of park. The other day the service engine light came on but I thought it was due to the gas cap. Anyway now the Differetial Lock light comes on when I press the brake and it will not shift out of park. Please someone help! It starts fine it just won't shift into gear. This Differential Lock is only something that the dealer may turn on while they are working on it. I have not been to the dealer. Any suggestions? Thanks.
You can engage the diff lock under the truck on top of the transfer case. On the D1's the shifter moves from side to side to engage it. Make sure your brake light switch is ok. Can you hear the click by the shifter allowing it to be moved? Should hear 3 click 1 brake light switch engaging the lights, 2 gear shift brake lockout, 3 brake light switch for cruise.
I'll see if I can find a pic of the diff lock switch for you.
If you get it going, take it to you local auto parts store and have them pull the codes (for free) and get back to us.

I would suggest you call me, sounds like you need a little help on fixing this issue. In the mean time, have someone stand behind your truck and see if you have any brake lights.

I really appreciate the suggestions! I will work on it tomorrow and get back to you all. Disco Mike sorry I was out of pocket today. I will try to call tomorrow afternoon or evening what ever works best for you?
Ok, so I have this EXACT problem on my 2000 Disco II. Except no warning lights are on. The only thing I can't do is shift out of park. I noticed that the brake pedal felt strange. So...
I had my wife stand behind the car as I pressed on the brake.... Nothing. With the car running or when it's not. It seems to me that the shift lock won't release because the brakes aren't registering.
HELP!

You have a failed brake light switch located on the brake pedal arm, replace it, takes just a couple of minutes to do, and you'll be fine.
Try this.. Get it based on your year/model. http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/XKB000010.cfm
