2000 Discovery coolant leak
Please help. Our Discovery started leaking coolant and you could smell it for a couple of weeks. The heater quit working but not the fan. Heated seats quit working. Car ran hot so we changed the thermostat but it still leaks. It looks like it is coming from aroung the manifold intake. What should we do?
Your heat quit working because you didn't have enough coolant to warm the heater core.
There is a kit from the dealer for around $20 to fix the leaking throttle body. Have the cooling system pressure tested to see where you are leaking from. Sounds like this kit may fix it.
Keep your eye on the temp gauge. If you get it hot, you can kill the motor fast. It won't take much.
I wouldn't drive it until you find and fix the leak.
The seats are unrelated.

You can also bi-pass the system by using a small piece of copper pipe, joining the 2 hoses together and forget about it, I did that 3 plus years ago when I couldn't find the new kit, and have never had a problem since.
I had the same prob. with my 2000 Disco II, abouta year ago. The dealer replaced the radiator all the hoses and the seal by the intake manifold (Thankfully still under it's extended warranty). Then around August of last year the seal by the intake manifold started leaking again. The dealer replaced it again, and the whole time they're trying to make me feel like they're doing me a favor by not charging me anything for the fix (Hello! You just replaced this not that long ago). If you are out of warranty and if your disco has the red coolant you are best to have your sys. flushed and replaced with the green. Word is, that the red coolant turns acidic after a few years. This in turn corrodes the coolant sys. causing leaks.

Acording to the article as long as you completly flush the system with fresh water you can use whatever you want.
The coolants are not compatible not the other way around. At least thats how I understood it.
I dont know how they can "coat" the inside of the block and heads during manufacture.
I think the main thing is to flush and fill more often than remommended. If the coolant lasts for 150k probaly cut that in half, or even thirds.
