Default 2000 Discovery..Drives..Bad Tranny??

2000 Discovery..Drives..Bad Tranny??...Quick quistion...If there is such a thing...I have the chance to buy a 2000 Discovery w A/T v8 etc....at a great price....What scares me is....when you put it in drive it goes nowhere...Reverse is fine...If you put it into L1 start driving and shift you're way up L1,L2,L3,then into drive...It works fine...once at a stop..you have to do the process again....Any suggestions....Will it last a while?? Is it a adjustment...or....1st signs of the tranny about to go out....Or should I pass....Thanks all in advance>>>>

I'd pass on it. Even if the fix for that issue is easy/cheap it's not a good sign of what's to come with the rest of the truck, and you can probably find a better Disco just as cheap. Also, just so you know all Discoveries require premium gas, DIIs (mid 99-04) have to have the driveshaft rebuilt (no more than $200, if you don't it'll put a nice big hole in the side of your tranny), and also make sure to get started on DiscoMike's 60k list as soon as you can. Hope that helps

Is there a check engine light on??
Just out of curiosity, how much are they asking for it?
It could be something as simple as the tranny needing a full flush and new fluid, hard to say.
But as already mentioned, probably need to stay away from it.

So on a DII when you out the truck in D is that done electronically or mechanically? Interesting to know what would cause it to do that. How much do they want for it? If under a grand I would go for it and flush the transmission fluid and change the filter.

I believe there is a check engine light on....I could pick it up for $2000 it has a 112k miles on it....I've heard from one local Land Rover mechanic that the Disco tranny's are "extremly reliable"...I figured worst case secenario I could fix it and stil get my money back on it to find another one if there are many more problems to come....Thanks again... Oh what to do....

They are but I would not spend 2K on that. If it was as simple as changing the ATF you would think the current owner would have done it. I would stay away unless like I said they were giving it away (~$1000)

Some people dont know anything about cars, when there is a problem they just dump it because they think it will be a big $$$ fix.
For $100 you could change the fluid and filter and see what happens.
